First week at the $20s…ugh

I got moved up to the $20+$2s last week (March 15th). I decided to play an equal amount of $10s and $20s to get my feet wet before completely moving up. As you can see, I got off to a great start the first day. Unfortunately I hit my roughest patch so far and ended up down about $120 on the week after 165 tourneys. (Thank god for rakeback — I’ll be getting about half of that back this friday).

The funny thing is, I’m slightly up in the $20s this week; it’s the $10s that I got killed in. It seemed like every light shove I made got called, every big pair got snapped off, and every coin-flip landed in my opponent’s favor. My confidence is definitely shaken, because this is my first losing week so far. Mental toughness is an area of my game that needs a bit of improvement — so hopefully this will help build my resilience. More luck to me this week!

I’ve been playing for Collin Moshman for about 2 months now. Our initial agreement was that I would play 200 games a week at the $10 non-turbo/$11 turbo level, with a few shots at $20s. Unfortunately, due to work and social life (I am in my mid-twenties), I’d been unable to deliver the goods (or at least that’s how I justified it to myself).

I finally buckled down and decided that it’s time to start meeting the goals that I set for myself, instead of dreaming big and accomplishing nothing. Don’t get me wrong, big dreams are not a bad character trait; quite the contrary. But continuously starting projects (whether they be books, diets, exercise routines) and not following through starts to take its toll on you &emdash; you start to feel like a failure.

So finally, in my ninth week, I reached 202 games in one week. Hopefully this is the start of something big for me! I performed reasonably well…a little below my 18% roi I’d been maintaining, but 18% is not likely sustainable anyway (I only have about 750 games on full tilt so too soon to tell yet). For those of you tl;dr types:

As I side note, I believe I am getting moved up to the $20s with shots at the $30s this week. It’s a little nerve-wracking to play with $1,000 of someone else’s money, but I have a good ROI at the low- to mid-stakes levels, so as long as I don’t encounter Old Man Variance I should be just fine. I may get another coaching session with Colin himself; I’m keeping my fingers crossed, as he has a plethora of wisdom to bestow on me.

Poker software for the Mac

There are a number of blogs dedicated to playing poker entirely on a Mac. This is not one of them. However, I would like to share my knowledge about what is currently available — mainly because the more buzz that’s generated about the subject, the more likely Macs will become a viable option for poker (without the use of VMWare Fusion or Parallels).

Currently, mac tracking software includes:

I am setting up Poker Tracker Mac as we speak, and I’m expecting it to be the best solution — mainly because of the reputation of the Windows version (which I’ve used extensively). I’ve tested Poker Copilot, and if it weren’t for Poker Tracker, I’d recommend it.

As far as AHK- (AutoHotKey) type programs, we are sadly limited to one — Blazing Stars; but from what I hear, it’s a pretty good one. Unfortunately, it only works on Poker Stars at the moment; development for Full Tilt is being discussed. Let’s keep our fingers crossed! Until then, I guess it’s back to Bootcamp for SNGwiz, TableNinja, and AHK. Sigh.

My name is Ivan, and I’m an online poker player. You can find me under the name “Savageau” on Full Tilt. I’m currently staked by Collin Moshman for 9 man single table sit ‘n go tourneys at the $10-$30 level.

This weblog will serve as both an analysis tool and a record of my frustrations, fluctuations, realizations, and hopefully, compensation, as a low- to mid-stakes sit ‘n go player. Sounds riveting, doesn’t it? In all honesty, if you’re not savvy on poker, there probably won’t be much here for you. I won’t be offended if you leave — as a matter of fact, it will please me. Go on, git!
